Local Government & Council

Southland is made up of three territorial authorities (councils) – Invercargill, Gore and Southland. There is also one regional council Environment Southland. The regional council is primarily responsible for looking after the natural environment.

Territorial authorities (councils) look after a range of community assets. This includes:

  • Roads, bridges, water supply, sewerage

  • Rubbish including emptying road side bins

  • Parks and reserves

  • Swimming pools, libraries, some museums and art galleries

  • Regulatory activities like building consent, parking fees, animal control, food and liquor licensing.
